7 Half Term Craft Ideas for Kids

October half-term is just around the corner. Hopefully, the weather will be crisp and clear all week, but in case it’s not, there’s no better time to start planning how best to occupy those rainy afternoons with cheap art supplies.

At MX Wholesale, we’ve been scouring the best craft blogs for all the best autumn children’s craft ideas and are pleased to be able to share with you the seven best that we’ve found. They can all be made with a basic range of craft supplies, such as coloured paper, felt tip pens, glue and string, all available at MX Wholesale, along with the leaves and conkers you may find on the ground...

1. Pine Cone Hedgehogs

This adorable idea comes to us courtesy of whimsy-love.com, one of our favourite craft bloggers. First of all, you’ll need to get the kids out to the park to find the pine cones before heading home to get out the googly eyes and felt. Simply cut four circles of felt in two different sizes and pop an eye in the middle. They are incredibly easy, and they’ll look wonderful in an array across the windowsill.

2. Paper Pumpkins

For slightly older children, why not try these folded paper pumpkins from diyinspired.com? Simply cut orange craft paper into strips and fold into concertinas. You’ll need two 7”, four 9”, and four 11” strips. Tape the ends together to make ten circles of folded paper, stack and glue. Use paper leaves and a piece of thick string to give your pumpkin an authentic look.

4. Autumn Tree Painting

This tree painting idea from rainydaymum.co.uk would make a lovely gift for the grandparents. Using your child’s hand as a stencil, draw around their fingers to make a tree with five branches and colour in the bark. Now collect together four wine corks for the painting part. Just dip the corks into the paint and then dab on the paper as leaves. Soon you’ll have a lovely colourful autumnal scene.

5. Chestnut Caterpillar

It’s always the question after you’ve collected a whole bag full of chestnut conkers: what are you going to do with them? Thankfully, artsyants.com has a great idea. Using a thin drill head, make holes in the conkers and thread an orange piece of wool through. Add a couple of googly eyes and a smile to complete.

7. Concertina Leaves

Brought to you by thecraftycrow.net, these lovely leaves are a Japanese tradition. Take a coloured sheet of A4 and fold into a concertina. Tie a matching coloured string around the middle and fold in half. Now you can cut the leaf into any shape you like. The more colours and the more leaves, the better the effect.
